RHS Back to Nature

  • WINNER – Gerald Davies Community and Schools Development garden
  • WINNER – Registered Designer and Registered Contractor Joint Submission- Adam White MBALI & Gerald Davies Ltd

Designed by Davies & White in collaboration with HRH Duchess of Cambridge and featuring reclaimed Keruing timber from Southend Pier as its central woodland walkway.

Reclaimed Keruing timber from Southend Pier takes pride of place in Gerald Davies’ winning Community and Schools Development garden – RHS Back to Nature (co-designed by Andrée Davies and Adam White in collaboration with HRH the Duchess of Cambridge).   A central feature of the celebrated garden is a woodland walkway.  FSC certified Keuring was specified due to its green credentials, durability, and beautiful character; created by the hundreds of thousands of visitors who walked the boards since the timber was installed on the pier in the 1980s. The garden is now on display in RHS Wisley in Surrey.

Reclaimed timber with a watery past was chosen to feature in the atmospheric Urban Retreat garden; winner of Registered Designer and Registered Contractor Joint Submission for Jilayne Rickards MBALI & Landscaping Solutions Ltd, and winner of the Design Excellence Award – Overall Scheme Under £50k.  We supplied an FSC certified reclaimed oak keel block from Chatham Dry Docks in Kent for the curved bench, and timber reclaimed from Bognor beach now enjoys a second life as durable decking and shelving.

Commenting Ashwells Managing Director Janine Davies-Tutt says: “We are thrilled to feature in four BALI award categories this year.  We all know the rainforest is disappearing, fast.  We also know that finding low-carbon sustainable building methods is the only way to reach net-zero by 2050.  Through our partnerships with eco-conscious designers, we’re meeting the challenges of climate change and demonstrating the potential of sustainable reclaimed timber.”
