This week we reclaimed huge oak fenders from Ridham Dock.  The fenders were installed just 10 years ago, but because the timber chosen was Oak they already require replacement.

The issue is one that we come across frequently, and one that can be solved easily by more specific specification.

Rather than specifying ‘hardwood’ for marine projects – as Oak fits the bill – it’s important to specify ‘tropical hardwood’.  This is because timbers including Greenheart, Jarrah and Ekki provide the durability required in marine environments – 25+ years life can be relied upon.

*Oak, reclaimed from Ridham Dock, had been installed for just 10 years before it required replacement.  Reclaimed Greenheart has a marine life expectancy of 25+ years.
