Sustainable Timber at RHS

Reclaimed sustainable timber has taken pride of place at this year’s RHS Chelsea, with Ashwells Reclaimed Timber featuring in both the Back to Nature and Facebook: Behind the Curtain gardens

At Ashwells  Reclaimed Timber we’re passionate about saving tropical timber from landfill and preventing trees from being cut down unnecessarily.  That’s why the collaborative projects we work on with garden designers and landscape architects are so important to us.  And this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show is no expection.

By working with award winning garden designers Davies White Landscape Architects and Joe Perkins Design – salvaging and reclaiming durable, characterful tropical timber we helped both designers demonstrate sustainable design best practice.

The Back to Nature Garden – featured a central woodland walkway – reclaimed from Southend-on-Sea’s historic pier having been first installed in the 1980s.  Designed by Davies and White in collaboration with HRH the Duchess of Cambridge.

Adam White said – “We were delighted to include reclaimed timber from Southend Pier in the RHS Back to Nature garden. The garden highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages families to get outdoors more”.

The Facebook Garden: Behind the Curtain – featured a wooden deck and sea groyne wall reclaimed from the historic Whitstable Yacht Club slipway, damaged in the winter storms of 2018.  Gold medal winning design by Joe Perkins Design.

Designer Joe Perkins said – “I looked to the coast for inspiration when designing this garden, the reclaimed tropical timber from Whitstable Yacht Club told a story of the sea’s power as an eroding force, adding character and strength to the garden’s final design.”

Deb Davies-Tutt of Ashwells Timber says – “It was an honour to be invited to supply timber for these high-profile gardens.  We’re passionate about rescuing tropical timber from landfill, the fact that the timber chosen was reclaimed from UK sites makes these sustainable projects even more poignant.”
